Online marketing is a bit of an art. The ultimate goal is to rank high in the organic ranking. These are the results that show up naturally (not paid for) when you type in a query.

For example when you type in “Hammers” and look at the results Wikipedia is on the top of the page followed by Estwing. We can ignore Wiki as the online dictionary and see that Estwing is number one. This position on a search page will get approximately 50% of all of the traffic from people looking for hammers. That should generate a few sales.
